One way to get quick value out of ObservePoint is to add rules for alerting based around your current implementation and validate for tag presence! You can use the Tag Inventory report to check which tags these are.

You want to take note of the tags that are at 100% presence across all pages. Of those tags which would you want to be alerted on if it suddenly fell off a page? Make note of that list. If you see a lot of tags here you're unsure about, you may want to collaborate with other teams and identify who owns which technologies. If there are others in your organization who'd like an alert you can always send an alert to their email as well! To get an export of this list click View Pages in the top right and then the export button which is at the top of the list of URLs.

Building the Rule

Next you’ll want to go to the Rule Library, you can get there from the main screen of ObservePoint so you’ll need to exit out of any audit you’re currently looking at. Once in the Rule Library click to Create New Rule. You’ll want to give the rule a name like Global Tagging Standard, Minimum Tagging Standard, or what makes the most sense to you. If it’s going to an audit that’s specific to a domain you may also want to mention that domain in the name of the rule or add a label to the rule that indicates its use case. Anyone who would need to receive an alert on these tags should be added in the Send Notifications. After that you’ll get to the Rule Setup. From there you want to add all the tags on your list in the Then I expect the following: section. To add a tag search for it by name in the Value area. Then to add a second tag click Add Expected Results.

Your finished rule should look something like this:

Applying the Rule

Once you’ve saved your rule you’ll need to go back to the audit you’re interested in and edit it. Once editing the audit, click on the Standards - > Tag & Variable rules section where you can add rules and apply them to the audit. Once you save the audit you can use the option Reproccess Rules to get quick feedback on if your rules are passing or not.

What next?

Once you have tag presence being monitored you’ll want to move on to variable validation. You can go to the Variable Report in the audit to see what variables are being passed by which tags. You’ll want to go to your most important analytics tag and pick some of the variables that are most important to you. Then you can create a rule around them. Remember an audit will only show events and variables that fire on page load for new users, any other use cases will require actions are added to that audit or you do that monitoring through a Journey.

You can validate the values exactly or use Regex to test for a range of values (ie; the value should also be two letters long). You can validate if the variable is set or if the value matches the value in the Data Layer. There are almost endless possibilities!

Focus on alerts that you care about! Don’t add emails that you’re not going to take action on. Passing rules will raise your audit score because it means you’re monitoring more of your site and not just scanning it.
